The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the official statistics of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), revealing that more than 1.5 million candidates scored below 200 out of the 1,955,069 who sat for the exam.

According to the data released by JAMB on Monday, only 420,415 candidates scored 200 and above, representing just over 21% of the total number of candidates. The figures also show that a staggering 75% of candidates failed to meet the 200 benchmark, while less than 1% of candidates scored above 300.

JAMB also disclosed that 40,247 underage candidates were granted special permission to sit for the UTME to showcase what it called “exceptional abilities.” However, only 467 of them (1.16%) met the performance threshold for exceptional ability, with further assessment still ongoing in three subsequent stages.

The examination body noted that 97 candidates were caught in examination infractions, while another 2,157 are under investigation for suspected malpractice. Additionally, 71,701 candidates were reported absent from the examination.

Some candidates also experienced biometric verification issues, with JAMB confirming that those who are cleared will be rescheduled for exams at approved centres.

The board added that results for certain categories of candidates—including blind candidates and those under the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG)—are still being processed.

JAMB announced that a press conference will be held later this week to officially unveil the individual results and guide candidates on how to access their scores.
