Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has placed families at the center of national development strategies through the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking during the International Family Forum (IFF), which featured 26 ministerial participants, the minister emphasized that Nigeria is actively integrating family-focused policies aimed at repositioning the care economy, improving caregiving systems, and protecting vulnerable populations.
In a statement released by her media aide, Jonathan Eze, she acknowledged the growing challenges families face in today’s fast-changing world — from urbanization and economic pressures to societal shifts, migration, health crises, and digital exposure.
In response, Nigeria has launched several key initiatives:
- National Framework for Family Cohesion – to address global challenges through family-centered interventions.
- National Family Strengthening and Development Programme (NFSP) – a community-driven approach to tackle poverty, domestic violence, and family breakdown.
- Committee for Family Cohesion – to support the national framework’s implementation.
- Nigeria for Women Programme – to empower women, protect their rights, and reinforce their roles in families and society.
The minister also announced the introduction of National Guidelines for Alternative Care for Children, ensuring vulnerable children receive appropriate, safe care. These complement the newly launched National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim called on world leaders to see globalization as an opportunity to co-create solutions that protect and empower families. She urged multilateral institutions to invest in family-oriented policies, create dedicated funding mechanisms, and embed family welfare in sustainable development agendas.
Nigeria, she said, is committed to partnering globally to develop a joint declaration on strengthening families, to be presented at multilateral platforms such as the United Nations.
