Minister of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Mr.Nyesom Wike, has directed the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) to immediately clear the waste litred on the Nyanya-Karshi axis.

The coordinator of STDD, Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, disclosed this while addressing journalists after an evacuation exercise on Thursday,August 7, 2025, in Nyanya, Abuja.

“The Minister has given me a direct order to come and evacuate the waste across this Nyanya axis, down to Karshi.

“And we hope, after that, we will go to other area councils because our main function is to intervene in the critical areas in terms of waste evacuation in the satellite towns. That is why we are here today, “he said.

He explained that his department was handling the exercise because contracts for the evacuation of the waste had expired.

The coordinator explained the large amount of waste, especially in the area, saying:“initially, there had been contracts going on here for three years. I think the contract was awarded in 2022, and the contract expired in April this year.

“So, we are carrying out another procurement process for the award of contracts. The Minister has graciously approved that, but, you know, procurement processes take a period, so within the gap, waste generation is a continuous generational act.

“The waste will be continually generated. Part of the measures the minister has made is that we should bridge the gap between the procurement process and when the new contracts will be effective.

“As you can see here, the waste evacuation is taking place, not under any contractor, but under the watch of the Satellite Towns Development Department, FCTA,” he stated.

He added that the refuse was being evacuated to dump sites, which are, at the same time, being worked upon.

The STDD Coordinator revealed that his men would move down the axis through Jikwoyi, Kurudu, up to Orozo and Karshi, to ensure that all roadside refuse dumps were cleared within 24 hours.

He advised FCT residents to work with waste collectors and make use of collection points and dump sites for a permanent solution to waste management, even as he noted some of the roadside refuse were a risk to human populations around.
