Spokesperson of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, Josephine Adeh, has cautioned Nigerians against trivialising rape, stressing that it is a serious crime that must not be confused with matters of affection.

Adeh in a post via her X handle, disclosed that she recently received a distress call from a lady who begged for the arrest of her boyfriend for allegedly raping her but pleaded that he should not be detained for too long because she still loved him.

The post reads: “A lady called me, begging: “Officer, please arrest my boyfriend, he raped me… but wait o, I still love him, don’t lock him for too long!

“Love is truly complicated, but let’s be clear: rape is a crime, not romance. No matter how you feel about someone, the law must take its course.

“If you or anyone you know is a victim of sexual assault, please report immediately. The police will treat it with utmost seriousness”.
