Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi has formally assumed duty as the eight substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja.
A statement posted on the university’s social media page on Thursday , December 11, 2025, said the new VC “takes over from Professor Mathew Adamu, who has been serving in an acting capacity.”
The statement added that the appointment of Professor Fawehinmi followed a rigorous selection process by the university’s Governing Council.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the new VC pledged to work collaboratively with all stakeholders and outlined a vision focused on strengthening academic excellence, research, innovation, and the student experience.

The statement quoted the new VC as expressing his desire to lead the institution toward its world-class aspiration.
Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi is a distinguished scholar of clinical anatomy and biomedical anthropology with over three decades of leadership at national and international levels.
