A suspected bombing attempt at the Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja was thwarted yesterday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated, killing the carrier and injuring two bystanders.
According to eyewitness accounts, a yet-to-be-identified individual attempted to smuggle the explosive device into the highly secured military facility. Alert military police and intelligence officers became suspicious and directed the suspect to move away from the checkpoint. Moments later, the device exploded near the bridge bypass, not far from the barracks entrance.
The blast resulted in the death of the carrier on the spot and left two civilians injured. Both victims were quickly transported to a nearby military hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
However, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed the explosion in a statement released by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh.
“At about 2:50 pm on May 26, 2025, we received a distress call reporting an explosion along the Mararaba–Nyanya bypass. Our Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was immediately dispatched to the scene,” she stated.
“The area was cordoned off to ensure public safety while clearance and forensic analysis commenced. One male victim was rescued from the scene and taken to the hospital, where he is currently receiving care.”
SP Adeh further assured residents that a full investigation has begun to determine the nature and source of the explosive device.
“We urge residents to remain calm. There is no immediate cause for alarm. However, we call on everyone to stay alert and report any suspicious individuals or objects to the nearest police station.”
The area remains under tight security as forensic experts comb the scene for evidence.
