Barely 24 hours after the launch of the newly-formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, internal cracks are beginning to show as leading political figures shift focus from unity to personal ambition.
The coalition, positioned as a formidable opposition to President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), brings together several political heavyweights, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Senate President David Mark.
Initially celebrated as a rare alliance of politicians across ideological divides, early signs of internal rivalry are now surfacing, as key players begin staking their claims for the 2027 presidency.
Amaechi Declares Presidential Ambition
Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Thursday, former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi officially declared his intention to run for president, pledging to serve only one term if elected.
“Yes, of course,” Amaechi responded when asked if he would commit to a single term. He pointed to worsening insecurity and economic hardship under the current administration as justification for a leadership change. He also emphasized the need for the South to complete its turn in the presidency, stating, “The South must be allowed to complete their tenure.”
With Amaechi’s announcement, the race within the ADC has effectively begun, as contenders begin advancing personal political agendas under the coalition banner.
Datti Endorses Obi for 2027
In a separate development, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who was Peter Obi’s running mate in the 2023 elections, has openly endorsed Obi as the coalition’s best candidate for president.
According to Datti, Obi’s track record and popularity make him the most suitable figure to lead the opposition into the 2027 election.
As the ADC coalition navigates the early stages of its formation, these competing ambitions highlight the challenges ahead in maintaining a united front against the APC.
