resident Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday commissioned the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project (GAWSN), hailing it as a “symbol of renewed hope, dignity, and prosperity” for Nigerians. The infrastructure milestone is expected to triple the Federal Capital’s daily water supply, significantly improving access to clean, safe drinking water.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Abuja, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equitable, people-focused development across all sectors. He described the water project as both a technical and moral milestone, reflecting the essence of his Renewed Hope Agenda.
“This water infrastructure is not just about laying pipes. We are laying the groundwork for healthier families, stronger communities, and a more productive city,” the President said. “It’s a treasure we often take for granted, but it is the building block of dignity and prosperity.”
He emphasized that the project directly addresses the needs of everyday Nigerians, ensuring no part of Abuja is left behind in national development. He also praised local and international partners, noting that the project’s success is evidence that “hope is being turned into tangible impact.”
The President commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), and the project contractor, CGCOC, for their dedication to public service. He also thanked the National Assembly and Nigeria’s international partners—particularly the People’s Republic of China—for their steadfast support of the nation’s infrastructure drive.
During his speech, President Tinubu paused to express sympathy for the people of Yelwata in Guma LGA, Benue State, following recent violent killings. Describing the incident as tragic, he pledged to visit the affected communities on Wednesday and called for peace and national unity.
FCT Minister: Project 85% Funded by China
In his remarks, FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike revealed that GAWSN was initially awarded in 2017 at a contract sum of $470 million, with 85% of the funding provided by the Chinese government and the remaining 15% by Nigeria. The project covers Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6 under the Abuja Master Plan.
“We thank you, Mr. President, for ensuring this long-awaited project was completed under your administration,” Wike stated. He also noted that during President Tinubu’s visit to China last year, additional contracts were signed to extend water access to satellite towns including Bwari, Kubwa, and Karu.
Project Overview: 425km of Pipelines for Phases 2–4
Giving a technical overview, Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Engr. Richard Dauda, said the project involves the construction of 425 kilometers of ductile iron water pipes to serve Phases 2, 3, and 4 of the Federal Capital City (FCC). He added that the work aligns with Abuja’s original master plan for infrastructure development.
China Hails Project as a Symbol of Friendship
Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, Zhang Yi, praised the successful completion of the water project, calling it a “symbol of the profound friendship between Nigeria and China.” He reaffirmed China’s commitment to being Nigeria’s most reliable development partner.
Zhang noted that over 3,000 jobs were created through the project, directly and indirectly, and many local workers received technical training. “China will always stand with Nigeria in its path to development,” he said.
Final Words of Appreciation
Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, in her vote of thanks, lauded President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of FCT residents. She also commended the visionary leadership of Minister Wike in delivering critical infrastructure.
Other dignitaries at the event included the Managing Director of CGC, Mr. Zhong Xiang, and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Umar Ganduje, among other top government officials.
