On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu approved the employment of 774 National Health Fellows, a key initiative by the Federal Ministry of Health aimed at driving long-term improvements in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“This is more than just a recruitment,” Tinubu stated during the program’s launch at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Special Advisor to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga. The statement, titled ‘President Tinubu Approves Employment for 774 Health Fellows’, was released on Thursday.

Tinubu’s unexpected decision was made in the presence of development partners, senior government officials, and traditional leaders, including the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse.

Tinubu praised the initiative for its bold vision and rigorous selection process, emphasizing its importance.

“This program is a transformative step that demonstrates my administration’s commitment to empowering Nigeria’s greatest asset—its young people,” he said.

He highlighted that with over 60 percent of Nigerians under the age of 30, the country has one of the most energetic, resourceful, and dynamic youth populations in the world.

“This creates unmatched opportunities to foster innovation, boost economic growth, and drive social change,” Tinubu said.

He explained that the National Health Fellows initiative is one of several programs introduced by his administration to empower Nigerian youths, equipping them with the skills and opportunities needed to succeed and contribute to the nation’s development.

The President also urged the fellows, who are the first participants in the health service program, to seize this opportunity and see themselves as the future leaders of Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“Your selection is more than just a recruitment; it reflects our commitment to building a nation where every Nigerian, regardless of social status, gender, or background, has equal opportunities,” Tinubu stated.

He affirmed that the youth are Nigeria’s greatest asset and reiterated his administration’s dedication to creating a future where the country stands as a source of pride for all.

The President highlighted the programme’s goal of developing future healthcare leaders who will drive lasting improvements and innovation in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“Healthcare is a vital pillar of national development. No nation can prosper if its people are unhealthy.

“An unsustainable health system poses risks, while true development depends on a strong and effective healthcare sector.

“You are the backbone of this vision, and I am honored to stand with you today,” Tinubu said.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Mohammed Pate, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasizing the critical role the 774 fellows will play in transforming Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

“I am here to tell you that a social movement to enhance healthcare in Nigeria has begun, and we are already seeing positive results,” he stated.

The selection and employment of the fellows—one from each local government area—came based on Pate’s recommendation. He praised them as the top candidates chosen from a pool of 360,000 applicants.

Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, Youth Minister Ayodele Olawande, and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, also inspired the fellows with words of encouragement.
