President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the publisher of Vanguard Newspaper, Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, in celebration of his 90th birthday on June 13, 2025. Fondly known in media circles as Uncle Sam, Amuka-Pemu was hailed by the President as a veteran journalist, a trailblazer in Nigerian media, and a respected elder statesman.
In a heartfelt message, President Tinubu stated:
“Today, I celebrate Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard, on his 90th birthday. Fondly called Uncle Sam, he began his journalism career at Daily Times, and later co-founded The Punch alongside the late Chief Olu Aboderin.”
The President highlighted Amuka-Pemu’s unwavering dedication to the journalism profession, urging younger generations of journalists to emulate his values of integrity, resilience, and excellence.
“After parting ways with Chief Aboderin, Uncle Sam founded Vanguard in 1984. Under his visionary leadership, the newspaper has become one of Nigeria’s most influential publications, surviving over four decades in a challenging media landscape.”
Tinubu praised Amuka-Pemu’s leadership both within and beyond the newsroom, describing him as a symbol of perseverance and an inspiration to the nation.
“Uncle Sam is more than just a media icon. His legacy extends to his role as a respected voice in Delta State and across the South-South region. His life’s work has shaped the Nigerian media industry and earned him the admiration of colleagues and the nation alike.”
In recognition of his outstanding service and contributions to national development, President Tinubu recently conferred on him the prestigious national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) during this year’s Democracy Day celebrations.
“We are grateful for his lifelong commitment to journalism and his enduring impact on Nigeria’s democratic journey. I wish him continued grace and many more years of influence and inspiration.”
