The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike has announced plans to create a special waste management taskforce to enforce sanitation laws and improve cleanliness across Abuja.
The Minister disclosed this during a brief meeting with waste management contractors on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, where he called for renewed commitment from all stakeholders to address the growing waste problem.
He revealed that he had personally carried out inspections across some parts of the city, observing alarming levels of refuse accumulation.
“I am moving to create a task force to enforce strict sanctions on all defaulters.
“We must not give naysayers the opportunity to say we have not done our work,” Wike said.
He expressed frustration at the persistent complaints from residents about dirty streets and heaps of waste, noting that some of those complaining may not even be paying their sanitation fees.
“Some of those shouting the loudest may not be paying their sanitation fees. When enforcement begins, they may still complain. But let us do our part,” he said.
Wike urged contractors to take their responsibilities seriously, emphasising accountability and diligence.
“We are not here to give excuses but to solve problems. A good dancer is known from the first step; the same with a good wrestler. Show commitment,” he said.
The minister called on roadside vendors, such as those roasting corn and pears, to take responsibility for proper disposal of refuse, warning that the new task force will enforce compliance.
Responding, the Chairman of the Association of Solid Waste Contractors, Ibrahim Babayo, assured the minister that contractors would cooperate fully.
He also disclosed plans for a peer monitoring system to oversee sanitation activities across the city.
Babayo thanked the minister for ensuring the timely payment of contractors, adding that the association was committed to delivering improved service.
